The Alamo Mission is commonly known as the Alamo or the Mision San Antonio de Valero. It was established in the 18th century by Roman Catholic missionaries, in San Antonio, Texas. It was the location of the Battle of the Alamo, 1836, in which American folk heroes James Bowie (and Davy Crockett) died. It is now a museum within the Alamo Plaza Historic District and part of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site. It was renamed Alamo in 1893 when it became a fortress. During the Texas Revolution in 1835, Mexican General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered it to the Texian Army.
