The Alamo Mission is commonly known as the Alamo or the Mision San Antonio de Valero. It was established in the 18th century by Roman Catholic missionaries, in San Antonio, Texas. It was the location of the Battle of the Alamo, 1836, in which American folk heroes James Bowie (and Davy Crockett) died. It is now a museum within the Alamo Plaza Historic District and part of the San Antonio Missions World Heritage Site. This historic district was built in 1793 to educate local Indians following their conversion to Christianity. In 1793, the mission was converted to Christianity and abandoned. It was renamed Alamo in 1893 when it became a fortress. During the Texas Revolution in 1835, Mexican General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered it to the Texian Army. This was following the Siege at Bexar. The compound was occupied by a small number of Texan troops for several months. The Battle of the Alamo, March 6, 1836, saw the destruction of the defenders.
